Rules

The Spikeball Tour Series follows the USA Roundnet ruleset.

Is that legal?

If you'd like the STS Team to review a questionable play, send an email to tournaments@spikeball.com with the subject line "Rule Review" and provide any necessary links or context.

We're hoping this process can help us:
  • Provide clear information on rule questions
  • Collect, organize, and share examples that illustrate nuances of the rules
  • Call out violations, making it easier to know what to look for

Referee Guidelines

Objectives

The Spikeball Tour Series and USA Roundnet are excited to partner on a Referee Initiative to advance officiating in roundnet with the following objectives in mind:

  • Create a better player and fan experience
  • Increase pace of play
  • Increase clarity of calls
  • Maintain adherence to rules
  • Increase consistency in application of rules within each match

Referee Roles

They are responsible for the officiating as a whole. They can make any call and overrule other officials. They maintain the pace of the game and set the boundaries on discretionary decisions.

  • Before the serve
    • Ensures correct rotation
    • Ensures correct server
  • During the serve

Infractions

Calling Infractions

Referees will immediately stop play by loudly calling “Fault” and raising their flag if:

1. The infraction would lead to a point earned by the opposing team

2. The infraction does not allow for a continuation of play (e.g. rim)

If the infraction would not lead to a point earned by the opposing team and allows for a continuation of play, the referees in charge of the call will:

  1. Loudly call “Fault” and raise their flag. This indicates that an infraction has happened and players have the option to take the next hit or replay the point.

  2. Each of the other referees will raise their flags upon the option call to make a visual cue to alert players and then they will direct players to the referee that made the call. (ex. Referee 1 calls NHZ on the hitter, Referee 2 & 3 point to Referee 1 so that the players are informed of the call)

  3. If a team chooses to play through the infraction by taking an additional hit after the call, the referees will lower their flags and play will continue

    1. Calls cannot be returned to once a team has continued play beyond the infraction

    2. If an infraction occurs on the third touch of a possession and would not result in a

point awarded, the point will be replayed if the shot misses or play will continue if a legal shot is hit.

What happens if a referee sees an infraction occur outside of their area of focus?

Discretionary calls should only be made by the head referee or the referee assigned to make that call. These calls include things like illegal contact, hinder, and determining between pocket and rim. If any referee has a definitive, 100% perspective of an objective call (net contact, NHZ violation, ball ground contact, etc.) they can call the play dead.
